Jizerka
The settlement of Jizerka can be found on the Malá Jizerská Meadow in the heart of the Jizera Mountains. It lies at an altitude of around 850 metres above sea level, making it one of the highest permanently inhabited places in the Czech Republic. Around 30 houses and cottages are connected to the outside world by a mountain road leading from Kořenov and Horní Polubný.
Jizerka is exceptional for its preserved architecture, natural beauty, and the peace that reigns here throughout the year. The area is an ideal destination for hiking, cross-country skiing trips, and relaxing in the pristine nature of the protected landscape area.

History of the Glassmaking Settlement
Jizerka originated as a glassmaking settlement at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. The most important period was the flourishing of glass production under the leadership of the Riedel family, who operated a glassworks here that became known throughout Europe. Local inhabitants lived a hard but proud life in the heart of the mountains – heating with wood, producing glass, grazing cattle, and picking blueberries.
Today, a small museum of Jizerka is located in the former school building, and some of the historic houses have preserved their original character. A typical example is the Riedel Villa or the mountain hotel Panský dům, which continues the tradition of hospitality in this region.
An Oasis of Silence and Stars
Thanks to the absence of disturbing civilization and minimal light pollution, Jizerka is part of a dark sky area – ideal for observing stars, the Milky Way, and astrophotography. The place is popular not only among astronomers, but also among visitors who want to relax away from the bustle of cities.
Peat Bogs and Bukovec
Jizerka lies on the edge of a nature reserve with the extensive peat bog of Malá Jizerská louka. The area is home to rare species of plants, birds, and insects. An educational trail leads visitors across viewing platforms and wooden walkways, allowing them to observe the protected landscape without disturbing it.
The dominant landmark of the settlement is the mountain Bukovec (1005 m above sea level) – the highest basalt peak in Central Europe. From its summit, panoramic views open across the ridges of the Jizera Mountains, the Krkonoše Mountains, and in good visibility even Poland.
Modern Facilities in a Traditional Spirit
Although Jizerka has preserved its authenticity, it now offers comfortable facilities for visitors. You will find several accommodation options, a restaurant, wellness facilities, and a starting point for many hiking and cross-country trails. Guests staying in the settlement are allowed to drive their cars directly into the village.
